Understanding A Rottie's Character
A family has decided on a dog. The type of dog that has been agreed upon is a Rottweiler.
This dog is able to be social within a family setting. It functions as a certified guardian / watch dog for a family's safety, yet it can turn around and play catch with the kids or just roll over for an old fashion belly-rub.
The Rottweiler is an energy dog. The family is an energy family. So the trips to the beach or a stroll on the hiking path will not be alone.
For this family's life-style; this was a good dog.
It was determined that dad will be the main person handling the puppy. This allows the puppy to establish a 'safe-friend'.
The puppy's environment has been changed so it is looking for comfort or a comfort zone. There should be one person ('safe-friend') that the puppy can bond with. The amount of time to bond is important as well. That is why it is always a good idea to bring the puppy home on a weekend. This allows the bonding to have very few interruptions.
...So, the family picked-up their new puppy on a Thursday night.
(Dad took-off the next day to help the puppy. The whole weekend will be designed to help the puppy adjust.)
The new puppy will be an indoor and outdoor dog. This means
potty
training. The family set-up a portable kennel (crate) to establish the puppy's initial living quarters.
It is wise to introduce the puppy to one room at a time; the place where you want the puppy to use the bathroom should be one of the first places to show them.
The introduction of the house room by room slows the bathroom mistakes.
The first few times that you 'kennel' the dog, you may encounter a very unhappy puppy. The puppy has been seperated from its parent(s) and litter-mates. Now, we are setting up a new environment with kennel (crate) as its first lesson.
Puppies are quick to play, if you find their hot spot or trigger. Play with the puppy for at least 30 minutes or so prior to placing them in the kennel. The idea is to take as much possible energy from the puppy. When you place them in their new kennel (crate), the puppy should welcme some rest.
Once you have started any training, please maintain a routine. Dogs are best trained in the manner of a routine.
